Bird Island

Get back to nature in this escapists' paradise - comfortable accommodation, excellent food and full of natural wonders.

Bird Island, 70 hectares of coral island, a mere 1.5 by 0.5 miles, offers an escapists dream of soft powdery white beaches, shady casuarina groves and blue waters.

A multi award winner, most recently named 7th in the worlds best places for real Eco Tourism by the BBC wildlife magazine and with an active environmental policy, Bird Island was declared a private Reserve in 1996. It is ideal if you crave a simple non-sophisticated natural environment and a lovely warm welcome from the Seychellois staff. Quite simply, the island provides a magical holiday experience.

The delightful individual bungalows are spacious, comfortable and typical of the informal style of the island. Each has its own patio overlooking the gardens with the sea just a few metres away. The lounge area of each bungalow can be converted to two additional beds (2 children or 1 adult). Hot water is supplied to showers by solar panels.

The main complex houses the reception, spacious and open lounge, bar, restaurant, small boutique and library.

Local wildlife visiting the island include: millions of sooty terns from May to October; and Hawksbill turtles can be seen between October and February during the day as they lay their eggs on the beach. There is an active turtle monitoring programme and between late November and April it may also be possible to see the little hatchlings making their way to the sea!

Bird Island is committed to the promotion of conservation and sustainable development within the tourism industry. Guests and hotel staff are encouraged to actively participate in the island’s conservation projects. The introduction of nature boat tours has been a huge success, with regular sightings of turtles, manta rays, and dolphins (all weather permitting of course!).

Of course, one must not forget the famous Esmeralda. This giant tortoise is reputed to be over 200 years old. He, yes he! is often seen trundling around the island!
