Seychelles Islands
Although Seychelles are made up of over 100 islands, Mahe, Praslin and La Digue constitute the 'main' Seychelles islands and offer visitors quite different experiences.
Mahe, the largest island is home to the International airport and seat of Government. Mahe offers the widest selection of hotels and resorts set amongst stunning scenery and on breathtaking beaches. The second largest island, Praslin is only 15minutes by air from Mahe. Orginally named Ile de Palmes by the man credited for discovering the Seychelles (Lazare Picault) it was later re-named Praslin and offers visitors the chance to see the famous Vallee de Mai - a primevil rainforest and home to the coco de mer nuts and catkins.Praslin also has a number of superb beaches where most of the hotels and resorts are located. Accommodations on this island are smaller, more intimate and are usually referred to as Boutique-style. La Digue, the smallest of the 3, is a step back in time. Here you glimpse what life in the Seychelles would have been before the intrusions of the modern world. The only means of transport is the ox cart as a main form of transport around the island or if you would rather, bicycles. Hotels on La Digue are small and wonderfully rustic in design. The many other small islands offer a diverse range of flora and fauna particular to them and most are surrounded by coral reefs teaming with a kaleidescope of colour. The accommodations range from the most luxurious island resorts, to small rustic lodges. |
