The second largest island in the archipelago lying 37 kilometers north-east of Mahé, Praslin can be reached by air in 15 mins or by ferry in 1 hour. The island is approximately 10.5 kms by 3.7 kms. Situated in the middle is a tiny but magnificent forest, the Vallee de Mai, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 by UNESCO.

At only 48.2 acres, making it one of the smallest natural World heritage Sites, it is home to the famous coco-de-mer (coconut of the sea) tree so named as its enormous seeds shaped like a human pelvis were found washed up on distant shores. In fact it is the largest and heaviest seed in the world, weighing up to 20 kg. The Coco-de-Mer grows naturally only on Praslin and Curieuse. In the trunks and leaf canopy of the coco-de-mer and other forest trees you may be lucky to see endemic birds such as the Black Parrot or as the seychellois would say "kato nwanr", the Seychelles Bulbul or "merl", Seychelles Blue Pigeon or "pizon olande". When General Gordon of Khartoum visited the island, he claimed the forest to be the setting for the original "Garden of Eden".

Getting around Praslin could not be easier, either hire car, local bus or bicycle.

The island has some fantastic beaches but don’t miss Anse Lazio, once rated as one of thebest beaches in the world by Georgio Armani.

Praslin is an ideal base to visit and explore other islands by boat such as La Digue, Cousin and Aride both bird sanctuaries and Curieuse a giant tortoise breeding colony. If your Praslin stay is part of an island hopping trip, please ensure you allow plenty of time here.
